A consensus classification of this genus is hard to find; some authors include it in the Matucana, while others in the Oreocereus species. It was named after Arequipa, a city in Peru near which this species was found. Very rustic plants with beautiful flowers, albeit little known and difficult to find in the collections. They are easy to grow and require minimal care, like other cacti.
